FIATA Opening Ceremony Tuesday, September 22, 2009 (08:30 - 09:30) The Centre International de Conférences Genève, Auditorium 2 - Level 0 Included in registration fee Delegates and accompanying persons are invited to attend the Opening Ceremony. Mr Moritz Leuenberger, Swiss Federal Councillor, Head of the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications as well as the Geneva State Councillor François Longchamp will represent the city and welcome all participants. The "Vieux Grenadiers" will escort the VIPs to their seats and the ceremony will begin. In 1705, the first corps of the Grenadiers was created within Geneva's militia troops. Back in 1749, several of Geneva's Grenadiers decided to form a club or circle to meet on a regularly basis, to discuss many subjects including politics, but also play cards, and have a good time together after their military training. This circle today consists of more than 1,000 members of Geneva's male citizens. In 1896, for the Swiss National Exhibition, a platoon of about 10 members of the society, decided to wear the 1813 Geneva Grenadiers uniform to fly our banner. Today, this platoon has grown. As can be seen in the picture, Geneva's Old Grenadiers Company is today made up of about 70 men. Some of them will be present at the Opening Ceremony.
